I have two Atari STs. A grey 520STFM with a gotek drive. This allows me to use .DSK image files with the atari in much the same way as inserting a floppy.
I also have the later 1040 ste with 4MB of RAM. The STE (enhanced) had better sound and improvements to TOS (the operating system.)
I was introduced to the Atari ST in the late 80s. My grandad had one and I used to go to his house once a week after school. It was a great advancement from the micros I was using at school (BBC Model B and Master) as well as the spectrum plus at home.
I played many games. The ones I remember the most were Dungeon Master, Hackers and Carrier command.
Based on the motrola 68000 series processor (like the Amiga) it was very powerful for its day. ST was an acronym for Sixteen Thirty-Two [bit] to represent the CPU vs the bus width.
The ST family were very popular in the music community due to the built in MIDI interface. Many music producers used them in the studio to sequence tracks.
